16. Client Testimonials:

My friend and I came to Allston looking to get our haircuts by a guy she usually goes to and who she said was really good, but once we got to the salon, they told us he had moved back to Brazil. So, in desperate need of haircuts, we walked back towards the Green Line, planning on finding some random place in Harvard Ave. Or Wherever, but then I spotted this place from across the street. It didn't look too bad from the outside, so we went to check it out. The place was big and completely empty, except for one guy- Frank, who, from the sign, I believe is the "Creative Hairstylist,' as opposed to the "Master stylist"

My friend and I were about to leave when he told us it was $45 for a wash, cut, & dry.  That is really quite pricey in our standards.  But halfway out the door, he said he'd give it to us for $32, since we're students.

I went first.  We both wanted something simple.  I wanted just a trim and some added layers and texture.  He worked really quickly, yet efficiently, which I liked.  The blow drying and straightening took a lot longer than the actual cut.  And he actually made me hold the straightener, because I guess he couldn't handle holding it and combing my hair at the same time.

In the end, I was satisfied with my haircut, and I guess I would recommend the place, but I, personally, wouldn't go back, because it is such a far T ride from where I'm from.

I came here by chance - I had an appointment at Leeba, but there was a storm and they lost electricity, so they closed. I was dying for a cut, so I ended up wandering around Allston-Brighton looking for a general hair salon (as opposed to a Korean, Brazilian, or otherwise specialty one) and finally found the Hair Design Center.  The man who greeted me was clearly the owner, so I was too embarrassed to ask about prices (which weren't clearly posted) and just let him seat me.

Sara, my stylist, turned out to be the sweetest, most talented stylist I've ever had!  Not only was she a great conversationalist (I'm terrible in the cutting chair), but she is someone who clearly loves hair.  She literally spent an hour and a half getting my layers exactly right and advising me on how to take better care of my hair.  She wasn't condescending at all (I hadn't cut my hair in about two years, so I was expecting the worst) and gave me some ideas for future highlights.  And, drum roll please...It came to only $40!  You can't do a whole lot for $40 in Boston, especially for a whole hour and a half.

The exterior is pretty shady looking, but the stylists here are top notch (my husband got his hair cut there the next week and was so excited when he came home, saying it was the first good and cheap cut he'd had since moving to Boston).
